Roma and Nicky Ryan

Roma Ryan, Enya and Nicky Ryan.

The Enya Creative Trio

At the heart of Enya's music lies a powerful partnership. Enya collaborated closely with Nicky Ryan, her dedicated producer and arranger.

Roma Ryan serves as the primary lyricist. She crafts words in multiple languages to complement Enya's instrumental melodies.

Enya is more than just me. It's also Nicky, who arranges my melodies, and his wife Roma, who writes the lyrics. They believed in my music from day one

Enya

The Origins of the Partnership

The trio forged their remarkable collaboration in the early 1980s. Nicky Ryan was managing Enya's family band, Clannad, while Roma worked as their tour manager.

In 1980, Nicky invited Enya to join Clannad to expand their sound with keyboards. After a band dispute during a 1982 tour in Switzerland, Nicky and Roma stepped down from their management roles.

Enya chose to depart alongside them to pursue a solo career. For the next seven years, she lived with the Ryans in the Dublin suburb of Artane.

Building Aigle Studio

In September 1983, the three formed their own music company, Aigle Music. The name "aigle" translates to "eagle" in French.

Unable to secure a bank loan, Enya sold her saxophone and gave piano lessons to generate income. Nicky used their available funds to build a recording facility from a former Scout hut on their property.

They named this space Aigle Studio. In the 1990s, the trio relocated the studio to a new property in Killiney, Dublin.

Nicky Ryan: Architect of the Sound

Nicholas Dominick Ryan (1946-2025) was a highly respected Irish music producer and recording engineer. He was born and raised in Dublin.

Before dedicating his career to Enya, Nicky gained recognition working with several prominent artists:

  • Clannad
  • Gary Moore and Thin Lizzy
  • Christy Moore and Planxty

Nicky conceptualized Enya's signature sound by layering hundreds of vocal tracks. He was heavily influenced by The Beach Boys and Phil Spector's Wall of Sound technique.

For songs like "Angeles," Enya recorded roughly 500 individual vocal tracks. Nicky's innovative use of extended reverb further defined their atmospheric style.

Roma Ryan: The Wordsmith

Roma Shane Forbes was born on 20 January 1950 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. She possesses a unique ability to sense the specific emotions within Enya's compositions.

Enya focuses primarily on writing melodies, leaving Roma to translate the musical feelings into lyrical verses. Roma's words are heavily shaped by the pitch and weave of Enya's voice.

Her lyrics have garnered major critical acclaim and prestigious awards. The song "May It Be", written for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, received an Oscar nomination.

Roma's lyrics are featured across several prominent films:

  • The Frog Prince (1985)
  • Green Card (1990) and L.A. Story (1991)
  • Toys (1992) and Cry, the Beloved Country (1995)
  • Reisei to jônetsu no aida (2001)

The Creation of Loxian

While working on the Lord of the Rings soundtrack, Roma studied J.R.R. Tolkien's Elvish languages, Sindarin and Quenya. This experience inspired her to invent a new fictional language known as Loxian.

Loxian was prominently featured on Enya's 2005 album Amarantine and later on Dark Sky Island. Roma created the language when traditional English, Irish, and Latin lyrics failed to capture the essence of certain melodies.

She expanded the Loxian universe through several creative projects:

  • She authored the companion book Water Shows the Hidden Heart in 2005.
  • She developed The Loxian Games, a series of online treasure hunts and riddles.

A Lasting Family Legacy

Roma and Nicky had two daughters together, Ebony (born 1978) and Persia (born 1983). Enya is Persia's godmother.

Both daughters actively contributed artwork and layouts to the 2005 release of Amarantine.

Nicky Ryan passed away on 10 September 2025 in Dublin. The musical legacy he built alongside Roma and Enya continues to influence the global music landscape.
